Murrindindi Shire Council and Aquatics & Recreation Victoria (ARV) are hosting a special program aimed at supporting young, up and coming swimmers at Eildon.

The VICSWIM Summer Kidz Day will outline the importance of water safety and has been particularly targeted at Eildon primary school students with Lake Eildon at its highest storage level for more than 15 years.

Eildon Ward Councillor Chris Healy said water safety was paramount heading into summer.

“With our waterways brimming, children are excited about the prospect of taking part in a range of water-based adventures, but importantly the key to a safe summer is developing the skills to navigate the dangers associated with aquatic activities,” Cr Healy said.

“This program will allow children to gain the basics in terms of water safety and build on their confidence over the summer.”

VICSWIM Summer Kidz coordinator Julie Rankin said the program was designed to develop water confidence, water safety knowledge, swimming and survival skills, and recreational enjoyment among participants.

“For many primary school children in Eildon it is a case of water everywhere,” Ms Rankin said.

“A whole generation of primary school children has been without water in the Eildon Weir and its associated creeks and rivers and now this aquatic landscape has been transformed offering an enormous aquatic playing field we are keen to prepare children for.”

The VICSWIM Summer Kidz Day will be held at Eildon Primary School on Friday 18 November.

The Summer Kidz program will be held across the shire in January. Enrolments can be done on-line by visiting the Vicswim website; www.vicswim.com.au or by calling the ARV office on 92713800 to enroll over the phone.
