Open Water Based Criteria

Enrolments are based on students working on achieving the following criteria per level. If the student has achieved the requirements outlined below for that level, they are eligible to move to the next skill level.

  • Assisted safety entry & exit of water 
  • Independent walking through the water
  • Whole face in water & blow bubbles

        Survival Skills

  • Wade into water
  • Floatation aided front & back float 
  • Assisted recovery to standing position
  • Kick on front and back with an aid
  • Aided roll over from back to front
  • Paddle short distance

        Rescue Skills

  • Float & wave
  • Raise alarm - signal for help
  • Be rescued with a rigid aid 
  • Clothed submerge
  • Introduction to basic body boarding 
  • Use of a lifejacket

  • Confident recovery to standing position
  • Assisted movement through water
  • Feet clear of bottom - torpedo through water 
  • Kick on front - face in the water
  • Kick on back - ears in the water 

        Survival Skills

  • Horizontal arm sculling - upright with assistance
  • Tread water & call for help (1 min)
  • Sculling on back
  • Introduction to survival backstroke
  • Aided 30 sec float - signal for help

        Rescue Skills

  • Identity rescue situation
  • Self preservation
  • Identify aids to use to perform for a reach rescue
  • Grasp & be rescued by a rigid object
  • Clothed activity
  • Practice paddling in shallow water 
  • Put on a lifejacket and float and paddle in water

  • Horizontal arm sculling upright with assistance
  • Backstroke
  • Freestyle

        Survival Skills

  • Tread water & signal for help for 1 min
  • Head first sculling
  • Lifesaving backstroke kick

        Rescue Skills

  • Identify rescue situation
  • Self preservation
  • Identify aids to use for throw rescue
  • Throw buoyant aid to rescue partner
  • Kick to shallow

        Survival Sequence

  • Swim out in waves
  • Tread water for 1 min
  • Survival scull on back for 30 seconds
  • Float for 30 seconds holding rescue floation aid - Kick to safety 
  • Clothed activity 
  • Paddle out & catch a wave into shore
  • Dive under waves
  • Put on a lifejacket in water,float & wave for assistance

        Survival Sequence

  • Rotate body in an upright position using arm sculling
  • Survival scull 1 min
  • Surface dive - underwater swim
  • Swim out in waves 15 metres then swim across waves 10 metre

        Rescue Skills

  • Identify rescue situation
  • Self preservation
  • Reach rescue using a rigid object
  • Paddle out 15 metres & catch a wave
  • Dive under waves
  • Put on a lifejacket in water & perform water safety activities

        Survival Sequence

  • Clothed swim
  • Scull, float or tread water (5 mins)
  • Swim slowly 3 mins

        Introductory Lifejacket & Body Boarding Activities

  • Correctly fit a lifejacket
  • Safely enter deep water & float (30 seconds)
  • Swim to shallow
  • Underwater skills - recovery
  • Paddle out in waves 20 metres & catch a waves back
  • Duck dive

       Survival Sequence

  • Clothed swim
  • Scull, float or tread water for 6 mins
  • Swim slowly for 6 mins
  • Remove clothing in deep water 
  • Reach rescue using a non - rigid object
  • Continuous swim - 4 strokes
  • Unweighted rope rescue
  • Continuous swim - swim out to shore 20 metres, swim parallel with shore 15 metres and body surf back to shore

        Body Boarding & Water Safety 

  • Paddle out for 20 metres & catch a wave back to shore
  • Duck dive & retrieve an object
  • Correctly fit a lifejacket
  • Safely enter deep water & float for 3 mins
  • Swim to shallow 
  • Perform water safety activities
  • Underwater skills - object recovery
